Professor Steve Simpson is Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre and an Australian Research Council (ARC) Laureate Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Sydney.
Stephen Simpson is leading the development of the Charles Perkins Centre's research and education strategies.
Professor Simpson's research spans locusts to humans, and is richly multidisciplinary. His work in nutritional biology has revolutionised our understanding of the dietary causes of human obesity and ageing.
"Tackling complex problems such as obesity and metabolic diseases requires many disciplines to work together," he says. The Charles Perkins Centre will provide an environment where new perspectives can yield paradigm shifts in understanding and provide novel solutions."

Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease are the leading causes of death, disability and reduced quality of life in Australia, and have become epidemics of global proportions.
The Charles Perkins Centre aims to inform, educate, and empower people to make better lifestyle decisions. We are bringing together outstanding academics and practitioners from within the University and beyond to:
- develop research programs that generate major shifts in our understanding

Obesity is a complex topic. Most other worldwide initiatives have narrowed their research to the level of genes, cells and organs. Although these are important factors, obesity related diseases are much more complicated than biology.

The Science & Research breakfast seminar series aims to give executives in the business, law and finance sectors a better understanding of key science and research issues and their impact on business, the economy and the community.
