Saving the Tassie Devil from Extinction

The Office of the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer had a lovely morning with two baby Tasmanian Devils at the Science and Research breakfast seminar. Siblings Willow and Bear accompanied Professor Kathy Belov's presentation on saving the Tassie Devil from extinction.

Professor Belov provided insight into her research about Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), a rare contagious cancer, as well as the impact of the emergence and evolution of DFTD strains using genomics technologies. She also explained the current state of Tassie Devil conservation efforts, and outlooks for the health and size of their population into the future.

Special thanks to Siobhan and Jenna from the Australian Reptile Park for bringing Willow and Bear to our enthusiastic audience who enjoyed cuddling the furry visitors.
