Quantum Algorithms and Applications Study

The Quantum Algorithms and Applications Study, commissioned by the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer and authored by Professor Michael Bremner and Associate Professor Simon Devitt from the University of Technology Sydney, explores the potential impact of quantum computing on NSW.

The study presents insights into the pathways for commercialising a quantum computer, as well as the probable algorithms and use cases for this technology within NSW.

Whilst NSW's capability in developing quantum computing hardware is well known, more information is needed about its capability in developing algorithms and the type of algorithms a quantum computer might perform. These capabilities are crucial for the commercial success of quantum computers and devices, and represent a significant opportunity for NSW to leverage its existing strengths.

The findings of this study include use cases, a projected timeline for quantum computing and an analysis of NSW’s capabilities, and will be of relevance to government, industry and investors.

Final Report

Launch Event

The Quantum Algorithms and Applications Report was officially launched by the Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, the Hon Anoulack Chanthivong MP, at The Quantum Terminal on Monday 27 May 2024.

Dr Kathrin Spendier, Technical Prize Director at XPRIZE Quantum Applications, presented on the XPRIZE Challenge, its connection to the report, and ways to get involved. If you missed the event, Dr Spendier's presentation can be viewed below.
